By Bud Shaver, Santa Fe, New Mexico- Tomorrow (Friday March 21, 2025) is the last day of the New Mexico Legislative session but there are critical abortion related bills that need your attention and action. New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) has interjected a $10 million allocation into the budget for a new abortion center in the northern part of the state. This bill has passed through two committees and the house floor. According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, A bill that usually garners strong support from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle has turned into a political lightning rod over one of the most politicized issues in the nation: abortion. Please act today by contacting your Senator and by calling Governor Grisham's office (505-476-2200) to ask that this funding be removed from HB 450 and pray that this bill which has funding for a plethora or other projects doesn't get signed into law with this money for a new abortion center. Another bill Abortion Free New Mexico is opposing is SB 404, this bill aims to prohibit releasing public data regarding abortions and "gender affirming health care." SB 404 specifically would repeal Section 24-14-18 NMSA 1978 (Being Laws 1977, Chapter 206, Section 2, as amended) which requires the reporting of induced abortion. In addition, it would establish civil penalties for intentional violations and allows individuals to sue for damages. Currently New Mexico law requires that abortion data be made available to the public. According to the Secretary of State's website, The Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA), NMSA 1978, §14-2-1 to – 12, is a New Mexico state law that provides the public access to public records. The law requires open access to almost all public records in state and local government, with a few exceptions." This bill will negatively impact our ability to obtain crucial abortion related data through IPRA requests if passed. Please contact the Senate Judiciary Committee and ask them to vote NO on SB 404.
