Santa Fe, NM- Two pro-life House Bills, HB 600 WOMEN'S HEALTH & SAFETY ACT and HB 608 ALLOW REFUSAL TO ADMIT PATIENTS FOR ABORTION are scheduled for their first committee hearing on Thursday, February 28, 2019, at 1:30 PM (Room 317).

Pro-Life House Reps: Gregg Schmedes (R) District 22, Rod Montoya (R) District 1, Rebecca Dow (R) District 38, David M. Gallegos (R) District 61, and Cathrynn N. Brown (R) District 55 are sponsoring House Bill (HB) 600 WOMEN'S HEALTH & SAFETY ACT or "Keisha's Bill".

Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico, with the help of Operation Rescue, uncovered and exposed the death of Keisha Atkins during a late-term abortion at Southwestern Women's Options in 2017. HB 600 is aimed at protecting women like Keisha and babies beyond 20 weeks of pregnancy from late term abortions in New Mexico.

HB 608 ALLOW REFUSAL TO ADMIT PATIENTS FOR ABORTION is a stand alone conscience bill. It provides the following safeguards:

BREAKING: 34 Botched Abortions Now CONFIRMED At Southwestern Women's Options Since 2008

By Bud Shaver

Albuquerque, NM- Since 2008, members of Abortion Free New Mexico with the help of Operation Rescue and local pro-life street activists have documented 20 abortion related injuries at Southwestern Women's Options which include at least one confirmed woman's death!
  • Click here for links to full audio recordings, written transcripts, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) transcripts, and published reports of ALL 20 documented injuries.
New Mexico Alliance for Life (NMAFL) recently released a log of 17 medical emergencies, that have been sustained by women during botched abortions at Southwestern Women's Options, which have resulted in emergency transports by ambulance since 2014.

This log includes confirmation of 3 abortion related injures that Abortion Free New Mexico previously reported on but were never able to obtain CAD reports or 911 calls for. These include:
  • February 13, 2014: Ambulances Rush to Nation’s Largest Late-Term Abortion Clinic After Two Botched Abortions
  • March 27, 2014: 16th Botched Abortion at Late Term Abortion Clinic In ABQ!
  • December 19, 2014: Ambulance Video: Seventeenth Known Medical Emergency at New Mexico Late-Term Abortion Clinic

The release of an additional 14 documented medical emergencies by NMAFL brings the staggering total of botched abortions at Southwestern Women's Options ALONE since 2008 to 34!

Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico released the following statement,
"34 is a staggering number of women who have been injured at the largest late term abortion facility outside of Communist China. Abortion facilities in New Mexico are currently completely unregulated, they are never inspected by the Dept. of Health and according to a New Mexico Medical Board ruling from 2011, there is no standard of care applicable when performing invasive abortion procedures. The 1969 Criminal Abortion Law currently in the cross hairs of radical pro-abortion extremists is not antiquated, as they claim. These 34 botched abortions prove that the 1969 law requirement that dangerous abortions be performed in an accredited hospital, should not be stripped from New Mexico law, but should be strictly enforced. The notion that abortions are safe for women is simply not true. The fact is, that the status quo that the pro-abortion community insists on maintaining with the passage of HB 51 DECRIMINALIZE ABORTION will just ensure that the number of women injured and their dead babies will just continue to pile up at the hands of late term abortionists."

Prayer Vigil

By Bud Shaver

Santa Fe, NM- The radical Pro-Death assisted suicide bill HB 90 was passed through the House Judiciary committee Wednesday February 13, 2019. It will now go to the New Mexico House floor...According to the Albuquerque Journal,
"The bill advanced past the House Judiciary Committee on a 9-3 vote, with Democrats in favor and Republicans opposed."
The Santa Fe New Mexican added more details about the intense debate that stalled the vote that was  scheduled last Friday,
"House Bill 90 has prompted some of the most emotional discussions of the legislative session, raising issues of life, death and the government’s role in deeply personal medical decisions. The bill also has prompted several rounds of amendments by lawmakers weighing exactly how the process should work for patients seeking such a choice.

If it passes the House, the bill would go to the state Senate.

The Senate rejected a similar measure in 2017 on a vote of 22-20. And it could be a tight vote again."

Enough Catholic Senators to Stop PRO-DEATH LEGISLATION If Vote Their Faith

2/10/2019

Picture
By Bud Shaver

Albuquerque, NM- The three bishops of New Mexico recently issued a statement in opposition to two pro-death pieces of legislation, HB 51 DECRIMINALIZE ABORTION and HB 90/ SB 153 ELIZABETH WHITEFIELD END OF LIFE OPTIONS ACT because abortion and assisted suicide are not in line with a consistent life ethic.
"Thursday, February 7, 2019 – We, the bishops of New Mexico, strongly voice opposition to proposed bills HB 51 (Decriminalization of Abortion), HB 90 and SB 153 (Legalization of Assisted Suicide). We support a consistent ethic of life. We have studied the legislation through the lens of the Gospel and Catholic moral and social teaching. We stand unified against any legislation that weakens the defense of life and threatens the dignity of the human being."
  • Read their full statement: New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops Support a Consistent Ethic of Life

HB 51 has been fast tracked through the New Mexico house of representatives and will now make its way through the senate. HB 90 was stalled in committee on Friday February 8, 2019 after public comments. HB 90 will be amended by the House Judiciary Committee and voted on Monday, February 11, 2019.

Fr. Stephen Imbarrato, Director of Life Ministries U.S. issued the following statement,
"The bishops of New Mexico have made it clear that they oppose these bills and have strongly stated the Catholic Church’s teaching against abortion and assisted suicide. I pray and I am hopeful that our Catholic State Senators stand by their faith and with the bishops of New Mexico and oppose these bills promoting abortion and assisted suicide which are always anathema to our Catholicism."
HB51 and HB 90/ SB 153 can be stopped in the New Mexico Senate when Catholic legislators, regardless of political affiliation, vote their faith and stand with the Bishops of New Mexico.
"Liberal logic dictates that if you are a legislator and your faith contradicts their radical leftist agenda then you should leave your faith and morals at the door. However, they do not mind if you invoke your faith to justify voting their leftist agenda. In fact, Representative Debra M. Sariñana- (D) did just that, on the house floor, when she invoked her Catholic faith to support the radical bill HB 51 which will remove New Mexico's 1969 Criminal Abortion law. This law was enacted to protect New Mexico women from the dangers of obtaining an elective abortion from unlicensed physicians at unregulated substandard clinics with their full consent.

Unfortunately, Catholic Democrats in New Mexico tend to vote the democrat party line instead of their faith.  On the contrary, Republican Catholics proudly vote their values and against abortion and assisted suicide legislation, while New Mexico Catholic Democrats have a tendency to compromise their values and put their party before their faith. Thanks to the three Bishops of New Mexico who have boldly and courageously set the moral standard for how a Catholic legislator should vote, we want to encourage faithful Catholic Democrats to stand with their Bishops and in accordance with their faith to OPPOSE HB 51 and HB 90/ SB 153," stated Tara Shaver, spokeswoman for Abortion Free New Mexico.
Abortion Free New Mexico would like to thank the bishops of New Mexico for condemning these bills that are an attack on the sanctity of life. Please contact your bishop and thank him and please contact these senators and ask them to stand with their bishop and for their Catholic faith to oppose HB 51 as it now makes it way through the senate.
The balance of power in the New Mexico Senate is:
26 Democrats
16 Republicans
(If there is a tie the Lt. Governor casts the deciding vote.)

Last Chance To OPPOSE Assisted Suicide (HB 90) Before House Floor Vote

2/7/2019

Picture
By Bud Shaver

Santa Fe, NM- This is your last chance to let your elected representatives know that you want them to OPPOSE the radical Pro-Death assisted suicide bill HB 90 ELIZABETH WHITEFIELD END OF LIFE OPTIONS ACT before the New Mexico House votes on it.

Abortion Free New Mexico is committed to preserving life in New Mexico from conception to natural death. HB 90 is the most extreme suicide bill that doesn't just give an individual the ability to kill themselves, it will also negatively impact those who cannot make these decisions for themselves. Those like Terry Schiavo, who are left at the mercy of their spouse or a child whose parents are mislead by their physician. The acceptance of assisted suicide in our state only expands the culture of death we are fighting so hard to eradicate.

  • BREAKING STATEMENT 2/7/2019: New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops Support a Consistent Ethic of Life
“The last enemy to be destroyed is death.”  (1 Corinthians 15:26 )
According to the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition HB 90:
  1. Allows nurses and physician assistants to participate in assisted suicide by defining "health care provider" to include: a licensed physician, a licensed osteopathic physician, a licensed nurse, and a licensed physician assistant.
  2. Does not require the person to "self administer." The bill states "may self-administer" meaning that euthanasia is possible.
  3. Reduces waiting period to 48 hours to receive the lethal drugs.
  4. Allows people with mental health disorders to die by assisted suicide by enabling licensed psychiatrist, psychologist, master social worker, psychiatric nurse practitioner or professional clinical mental health counselor to approve assisted suicide for people with mental health disorders.
  5. Requires health care providers to falsify the death certificate.
  6. Removes conscience rights for health care providers who object to assisted suicide by requiring them to refer patients to a health care provider who is willing to prescribe assisted suicide.
  7. Basis decisions on a "good faith compliance."  It is impossible to prove that someone who participated in the act did not do so in "good faith."
  8. Replaces the undefined term: "foreseeable future"  with the normal 6 month terminal diagnosis.

Santa Fe, NM- HB 51 Passed House Floor Vote with 40 Democrats Supporting the bill and 23 Republicans opposing, 1 Republican (Paul Bandy District 3) was excused.

These 6 Democrats, who truly care about the safety of women and future of New Mexico, voted with us for LIFE.

Representatives:

  • Anthony Allison (D) District 4
  • Wonda Johnson (D) District 5
  • Patty Lundstrom (D) District 9
  • Patricio Ruiloba (D) District 12
  • Joseph Sanchez (D) District 40
  • Candy Sweetser (D) District 32
Please contact them to thank them for standing with conviction and breaking from the party line.
  • You can click on their names for contact information to thank them.
Picture
  • Rep. Cathryn Brown (R-55) stated during the debate that in her 8 years of serving in the legislature she has never heard such a public outcry from her constituents in opposition to a bill.
Picture
  • Rep. Gregg Schmedes (R-22) valiantly stood for LIFE and for the conscience protection of New Mexico pro-life physicians who are concerned that HB 51 will strip their right to conscientiously object from performing abortions.
  • Rep. Rod Montoya (R-1) was also a bold voice for LIFE! He got the sponsor of HB 51, Rep. Joanne Ferrary (D-37) on public record to confirm what we have been saying for years, that New Mexico law already allows late full-term abortions up to the day of birth for any reason on healthy moms and healthy babies! Click here (or above) to watch an excerpt of his testimony.
Towards the end of the debate, in an exchange with Rep. Javier Martinez (D-11), Rep. Ferrary insisted that if HB 51 passes, nothing changes in New Mexico. This is simply a lie but the pro-abortion community hides behind lies every single day as they perpetuate and promote death throughout New Mexico.

Abortion Free New Mexico opposes HB 51 because it removes two enforceable provisions, that include the protection for a woman to consent to an abortion. This will leave the drug addicted, homeless and minors at risk of forced abortions. It will also open the door for non-physicians such as midwives and nurses to perform abortions further placing women's lives at risk.
  • BREAKING: TWO MORE BOTCHED ABORTIONS WHILE NM DEMS ARE SET TO STRIP LAST PROTECTIONS FOR WOMEN
HB 51 will now make its way through Senate committees first and then to the Senate floor before going to the Governors desk. Please continue to pray that the pro-death legislation doesn't succeed and that democrats in the Senate will vote with us for life.

BREAKING: Two More Botched Abortions While NM Dems Are Set To STRIP LAST PROTECTIONS For Women

By Bud Shaver

Albuquerque, NM- Abortion Free New Mexico, with the help of local sidewalk counselors, documented two botched abortions in January of this year at Southwestern Women's Options late term abortion facility that required medical transport to University of New Mexico Hospital. These emergencies occurred on January 10 and January 31.

In a public records request, Abortion Free New Mexico was informed that on January 10, 2019 no call to 911 was made by Southwestern Women's Options. Instead of calling 911 Southwestern Women's Options called, Albuquerque Ambulance, a private ambulance service directly to circumvent pro-lifers from obtaining the call and computer aided dispatch (CAD) record. This delay results in women having to wait to be transported to local emergency rooms, even though their injuries may be life threatening.

In total, over the years, Abortion Free New Mexico in conjunction with Operation Rescue have documented 17 abortion injuries at Southwestern Women's Options, the nations largest late-term abortion killing center.
  • Ambulance Video: Seventeenth Known Medical Emergency at New Mexico Late-Term Abortion Clinic
The last time that Abortion Free New Mexico documented a 911 call from Southwestern Women's Options was the day a late term abortion went terribly wrong and Albuquerque resident Keisha Atkins died from her injuries. Since Keisha Atkins death, it appears that Southwestern Women's Options has stopped calling 911 when a botched abortion occurs. Sidewalk counselors also informed us that when the two ambulances arrived last month that there were no lights or sirens. This is usually the abortion facilities attempt to not alarm the patients in their waiting rooms.
"New Mexico is already one of the least restrictive states when it comes to abortion. We are also home to the largest late term abortion facility outside of communist China. Due to New Mexico's lack of common sense regulations women who come to New Mexico for late-term abortions from all across the world remain in constant danger. The abortion cartel in New Mexico is unregulated and out of control, and yet the Democratic party is seeking to make sure we have absolutely zero protections for women by stripping away the only common sense provisions in New Mexico's criminal abortion statute. These minimal but necessary provisions include a woman's right to consent to an abortion and the requirement that only licensed physicians may perform abortions. Can we really expect the numbers of abortion injuries to decrease in light of these proposed changes in the law?" stated Tara Shaver, spokeswoman for Abortion Free New Mexico.
  • Southwestern Women’s Options own consent form clearly admits the dangers posed by late-term abortions:
“The risk of terminating a pregnancy gradually increases throughout the course of pregnancy. These comparative risks become approximately equal at 16-18 weeks of pregnancy and increase so that pregnancy termination at 18 weeks and above involves a greater risk than carring the pregnancy to term.”

Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico testified in Santa Fe, New Mexico today. She joined her voice in solidarity with New Mexicans from all across our state!
Santa Fe, NM- HB 51 passed the House Judiciary Committee today with ALL 10 Democrats supporting the repeal of New Mexico's criminal abortion statute. Passionate pro-lifers including Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico spoke on behalf of the babies and women who are victimized by abortion in our state.

The ten Pro-Death Democrats that supported HB 51 were:
  • Chair Gail Chasey (D) District 18
  • Vice Chair Daymon Ely (D) District 23
  • Eliseo Lee Alcon (D) District 6
  • Deborah A. Armstrong (D) District 17
  • Micaela Lara Cadena (D) District 33
  • Christine Chandler (D) District 43
  • Brian Egolf (D) District 47
  • Dayan Hochman-Vigil (D) District 15
  • Georgene Louis (D) District 26
  • Matthew McQueen (D) District 50
In addition, House Judiciary Chair, Gail Chasey rebuked a woman during her testimony who pointed out that Rep. Micaela Cadena should recuse herself due to her ties to radical pro-abortion groups.

Abortion Free New Mexico is grateful to the four Republicans that opposed HB 51:
  • Greg Nibert (R) District 59
  • William “Bill” R. Rehm (R) District 31
  • James G. Townsend (R) District 54
  • Zachary J. Cook (R) District 56
(You can click on their names for contact information to thank them)
Tara also urged legislators on the committee to VOTE based on a well formed conscience and to not invoke their faith in support of the pro-death legislation making its way through our legislature. Isn't it time we hold our leaders to a higher moral standard and keep them accountable?

HB 51 will now go to the house floor for a full vote and this will show us exactly where our elected officials stand.

Please contact your house representative by phone AND email and urge them to vote no on HB 51. Go to Santa Fe and talk to your legislator face to face and urge them to oppose this legislation. Your voice matters.
